Pioneer: Blu-Ray-Disk mit 400 Gigabyte

Pioneer's researchers have another 'world's first' on their hands as they have managed to manufacture a 12cm read-only optical disc with no less than 16 layers and a total capacity of 400 GB (gigabytes). Pioneer's breakthrough is that it was able to overcome potential problems with the signals obtained from the increased number of layers by utilizing a new disc structure that reduces the crosstalk from adjacent layers.

 

Coming with 25GB per layer, just like Blu-Ray discs, the new 16-layer media will probably be compatible with current players although a firmware update might be necessary. Pioneer has yet to give a time line as to when the new disc would become available.
